Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
Jackson Religious School’s core Jewish education curriculum ideally prepares our students to enter the next phase of their journey in Judaism by becoming a bar or bat mitzvah. We work hard to structure a compelling program that includes classroom work and service attendance to prepare your children to become adult members of the Jewish community. Our Rabbi, Rachel Ain, Cantor Luis Cattan, and our Torah Reader, Barak Levy, are actively involved in preparing your child for this rite of passage.
Because of our manageable size, our students enjoy a “luxury” almost unheard-of in Manhattan: we schedule only one bar or bat mitzvah per service. The opportunity for our students to lead bar and bat mitzvah services on their own – rather than share this service with one or more peers – is an almost unique characteristic of Sutton Place Synagogue. They are encouraged to lead various parts of the service, read from the Torah, recite the Haftorah, and deliver a dvar torah written by them after studying with Rabbi Ain.
